The following is footage from an interview alleged Gambino mobster Joe “Butter” DeCicco gave to award-winning journalist Pablo Guzman at FOX 5 New York during John Gotti’s racketeering-murder trial in 1992.
DeCicco’s brother George was an alleged Gambino crime family captain, and his nephew Frank DeCicco was Gotti’s alleged underboss in the Gambino family who was murdered with a car bomb in 1986. During the interview, DeCicco said Sammy Gravano, who DeCicco said he knew since Gravano was a kid, was behind Frank DeCicco’s murder so he could move up in power and wealth.
At the trial, Gravano testified that he was not involved in the murder of Frank DeCicco, who was Gravano’s close friend. However, Gravano testified that following the car bombing, he was promoted from Gambino family captain to Gotti’s consigliere, or number three man, and that later on he was promoted to Gotti’s underboss.
It must be noted that the evidence does not support that Gravano was involved in Frank DeCicco’s murder. Regardless, Joe DeCicco said of John Gotti during the interview:
“I know this man John Gotti since he was a kid too. I respect the floor he walks on. I think he’s one of the best gentlemen I ever seen in my life… and I want the world to know that I said this. That should be a verdict of not guilty on Mr. John Gotti. That’s my last words.”
