John Gotti Sr., The Teflon Don, who in 1990 was recorded by the FBI declaring himself the boss of the Gambino crime family, died on June 10, 2002. Choking on his own blood, chained to a bed, and suffering from a brutal head, neck and throat cancer while serving a life sentence in the Feds.
Which he could have avoided had he provided information to the government. But that’s not who he was. For better or worse, John Gotti Sr. was a gangster’s gangster, tough guy’s tough guy, who would never be an FBI informant.

Be as it may— on July 11, 2003, his son John Gotti Jr. discussed his death with his close friend and employee Steve Dobies while he was visiting him at FCI Ray Brook, the medium security federal prison in Upstate New York where Gotti Jr. was serving time after pleading guilty to racketeering charges in 1999.
The visit was secretly recorded by the Feds, who indicted Gotti Jr. on new racketeering charges in 2004. However, the FBI would dispute Gotti Jr.’s claims in 2005 that he retired from organized crime prior to going to prison in 1999. In 2003, they considered Gotti Jr. a Gambino family captain and Dobies an associate in his crew.
These days, the FBI’s position is that Gotti Jr. is considered “a rat” by Italian organized crime figures across New York. Not just for providing information to the Feds at a January 18, 2005 proffer meeting, in a bid to escape punishment from his 2004 RICO charges. But also, for other things, like naming names and discussing alleged Gambino family affairs in the media.
While the FBI no longer considers the college educated Dobies a Gambino associate, he still works for Gotti Jr., helping him with his creative accounting and to manage his businesses. But, beyond that, he also helps Gotti Jr. deceive, manipulate, lie to, rob, cheat, and backstab loyal friends.
Shockingly— on May 28, 2025, Dobies even sent me an extortionate, defamatory email on Gotti Jr.’s behalf. In which, based on lies, they threatened me with a lawsuit and, essentially, to frame me for tax crimes if I didn’t do what they wanted. By presenting business records in court, showing that I didn’t pay taxes on money Gotti Jr. paid me.
But which, in reality, he didn’t pay me. In fact, he robbed me, and engaged in a smear campaign against me. However— that is a story for another post:
RAT FICTION: John Gotti Jr. Threatens to Frame Me for Crimes, Tries to Extort Me
That being said— the government’s transcript of their July 11, 2003 conversation, an excerpt from which is below, quoted John Gotti Jr. telling Dobies:
“They’re gonna do their best to poison the public against me and I gotta to do my best to show what they really did here. I gotta show that they lied, they cheated, they stole, more importantly, we sue. We sue. Pure and simple…
We gave our word to my father we would not sue. My father said rats sue. Well then, I guess I’m a rat.”

NOTE: John Gotti Jr. said in his 2015 book — that I have learned, contained numerous falsehoods and deceptive, out of context statements — that his father John Gotti Sr. told him during a visit at USP Marion, the high security federal prison where he was serving a life sentence following his 1992 conviction for ordering five murders and racketeering:
“Rats and liars are cocksuckers.”
Which makes me wonder— what would The Teflon Don, John Gotti Sr., say about the below response letter I sent John Gotti Jr. and Steve Dobies on June 4, 2025, following their failed attempt to extort me?
By threatening to sue me — based on lies — and implicitly threatening to frame me for tax crimes.
